Kundalini Yoga

The basics

Chakras are the centres of energy in our body. There are 7 chakras which lie along the spinal cord. Each of these chakra is associated with emotions and spirituality. The Kundalini chakra is located at the base of the spine between the anus and the sexual organs. The sexual energy manifests in nature as a vibration that originates at the base of the spine.

What is kundalini yoga?

It works on the kundalini chakra. Kundalini is the dormant coiled-up energy that lies within us. Basically, kundalini yoga cleane the energy centres and the nerves. There are 72,000 nerves in our body. When the energy starts flowing, these nerves or nadis are purified. Practising this form of yoga over time opens up the dormant kundalini giving clarity of thought and a boarder perspective to life. It enables one to harness the energy of the mind and emotions so that one is in control of one’s feelings and thoughts.

How does kundalini yoga help improve sexual health?

Regular practice of kundalini yoga can greatly enhance your sexual energy. Asanas in kundalini yoga are known to help those who suffer from sexual dysfunction. This form of yoga will improve your ability to sense and understand your partner’s sexual needs. However, you can reap more benefits from this yoga if you perform the poses with your partner. The postures in kundalini yoga also help to strengthen pelvic muscles which can be helpful when you are attempting to delay your orgasm while having sex.

What are the variations in kundalini yoga?

Kundalini Yoga
expert Raman Mishra says ‘Kundalini yoga comprises yoga postures, breathing techniques and meditation. The yoga works differently for different people. Chanting may work more effectively for some; whereas for some breathing exercises can be more productive’.

What are the other health benefits of kundalini yoga?

Kundalini yoga is a combination of hatha yoga, raja yoga and tantra yoga. Hatha yoga asanas work on opening and cleansing of nerves. They also help in strengthening the nervous system to hold and carry the energy. Breathing and meditation techniques of raja yoga include alternate breathing that help in enhancing our senses. And finally, mantras from tantra yoga are included to attain higher spirituality and focus. Kundalini yoga also balances one’s glandular system, expands lung capacity and purifies bloodstream.

For how long should kundalini yoga be practised in a day?

According to Mishra, you can spend any amount of time practising this yoga and it will produce significant benefits. You can start with half an hour in the evenings and once you get the obvious benefits, you will be motivated to practise it for longer.
